You Can Use Two to Three Types Of Lettuces

We all know, the main ingredient in a green salad is lettuce. Lettuce by itself is not enough for a salad, using only one kind of lettuce in a salad can be dull. You will be happy with a colourful meal, healthy and fulling, don’t you?

A salad generally comes at the beginning of a meal, so it should wake up your taste buds and stimulate your appetite. Make it vibrant and enervating. Only one way of achieving that is to use different varieties of lettuce to highlight complimenting flavours, textures and colours.

The most common types of lettuce for salad are:

  • green and red leaf
  • Romaine

You Can Cut Lettuce Into Bite-Sized Pieces

Even most pre-packed Salad Lettuce Mixed Greens are pre-washed, its still a good idea to check for bugs.

Your lettuce should be cut into bite-sized pieces. The same goes for the other ingredients in your salad. The clean edges of chopped lettuces with a knife, look nice and its much easier to get equal sized pieces rather then tearing.

All depends on the season and type of tomatoes availability. Tomatoes are heavy and watery and can weigh a salad down with extra liquid. Cherry Tomatoes are much better, slice them in half before adding them. While eating trying to get a fork into a whole cherry tomato is just aggravating.

To keep it manageable you can add tomatoes to your lettuce. A green salad should include one or maybe two additional vegetables. Sliced red onion is a great choice or pickled Garlic (Granny’s Garlic Pickles) to add crunch and pungency. You can add a second one by sliced bell peppers, shredded cabbage, shredded carrot or sliced cucumbers. This will give you blend of colours as well as flavours and also good textures. Maybe, instead of green bell peppers, try orange or yellow ones.

Instead of chopping your salad into little pieces, slice them into bite-sized strips or shred/grate them. diced vegetables invariably settle to the bottom of the bowl when you toss the salad, but strips and shreds/grated pieces are more likely to remain distributed throughout.

How To Keep Your Lettuce Crisp

Crispness of your lettuces has to do with freshness, but how you store your lettuce will determine how long it stays crisp.

Keep it in the fridge, in a colander, or salad spinner basket (you can use the spinner to dry the lettuce after you wash them) with damp paper towels over the top. Lettuce need air circulation. Sealing them up in a plastic bag will actually cause them to go off faster.

Wet lettuce leaves are another no-no. If your lettuces is dripping wet then your salad dressing will just slide right of the leaves and pool at the bottom of the bowl. A green salad should be served chilled.
